If your office consists of cubicles where people work on computers and put in long hours, there could be ergonomic injuries waiting to happen. As most modern workplace employers are made aware, ergonomic injuries might not surface soon but when they do, they can be linked to the workplace environment and the kind of setting in which employees worked. Hence, a proactive approach will help prevent large medical costs arriving at the desk of an employer as well as decreasing levels of productivity.

Evaluating work stations

Evaluating work stations is the first step to ensuring that ergonomic factors are present for every employee where they perform their work. With most people working on computers, a standard workstation usually comprises of a computer monitor on a desk and a chair where the employee sits. If it is a call center setting or a workstation where additional desk job needs to be done, all items should be at easy reach. The monitor of the computer should be at eye level and hence, the workstation desks need to be a certain height accordingly. All such details are also covered in a manual handling certificate online course. These courses are often made mandatory in many countries. If documents need to be referred they should be positioned right. All such suggestions are to minimize strain to the eyes, hand joints and muscles at the back.

Sitting positions and postures

Posture of employees at desk jobs is very important. This is an aspect that is covered in detail at a training on manual handling as well. Whether one is sitting or doing any work that requires repeated movements, the posture needs to be right to prevent muscle strain and injuries that can come about. The wrists of the employees need to be flat on the keyboard when they type or else there is the scare of carpal tunnel syndrome. To prevent strain on shoulders and back the stomach should be held tight and back straight as well as upper arms parallel to torso and shoulders relaxed. Many training sessions have practical demonstrations to ensure that employees are aware of what is the right posture that they should maintain.

Conducting the assessments

Ongoing or periodic assessments need to be done for checking that workstations have the right ergonomic elements as well as people are maintaining the right posture during their work hours. It is also imperative that people are aware of the dangers of sitting at a single position for too long; hence promoting overall fitness is also a way to ensure better health and ergonomics at a workplace.
